Staples Closes California and New York Stores Amid Consolidation

The office supply chain Staples is closing two additional retail locations in August 2026, situated in Goleta, California, and Levittown, New York. The Goleta store had operated for over 27 years, while the Levittown location had been open for more than 15 years. These closures mark the end of the company's presence in Santa Barbara County and the Long Island suburb, respectively.

These shutdowns are part of a wider consolidation strategy to address the structural decline of the traditional office supplies market. The company is streamlining its physical footprint in response to the growth of e-commerce, the adoption of digital tools over paper-based workflows, and rising operating costs. This trend follows a series of store closures throughout 2026 in states including Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, as well as reductions beginning in late 2025.
