Republicans Nominate Jennifer Balkcom for NC 11th District

The Republican executive committee of North Carolina's 11th District selected State Representative Jennifer Balkcom on August 10 to replace incumbent Congressman Chuck Edwards as the party's nominee for the November midterm elections. Balkcom won the nomination in a first-round vote held in Asheville.

Edwards withdrew from his re-election bid on August 5 after the United States House Committee on Ethics recommended he be censured. The committee's investigation found that Edwards fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment toward two female staffers, describing his behavior as persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct. While the committee found no evidence of sexual activity, the findings led to his departure from the race.

Balkcom now faces Democratic nominee Jamie Ager, a farmer who has raised more than $3 million. The contest takes place in a conservative mountainous region where voters are focused on the slow recovery from 2024's Hurricane Helene. Political analysts currently view the race as a toss-up or leaning Republican, with Ager seen as a strong challenger due to local frustrations and low approval ratings for Donald Trump.
