US Unemployment Rate Rises to 4.2 Percent in September
The United States unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent in September as consumer confidence hit its lowest level since 2014.
The United States government reported that the national unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent in September, up from 4.1 percent in August.
While the rate remains low by historical standards, the labor market is increasingly characterized by a prevalence of lower-earning positions over high-paying roles. This shift has contributed to a decline in overall worker purchasing power.
This economic trend coincides with a sharp drop in consumer sentiment. A September survey by the Conference Board found that consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since 2014. More than 20 percent of survey respondents reported that jobs are "hard to get," the highest such sentiment in approximately a decade, excluding the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and early 2021.
