Sonam Wangchuk Apologizes After Comparing Ladakh Oppression to Tibet

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk apologized after comparing the Indian government's treatment of Ladakhis to the Chinese government's treatment of Tibetans. Speaking at a gathering in Leh on September 24, 2026, to mark the first anniversary of violent protests in Ladakh, Wangchuk asserted that oppression in the region was so severe that even China was not treating Tibetans as poorly as the Indian government treated Ladakhis.

The Central Tibetan Administration rejected the comparison as misplaced and inaccurate. The administration stated that the comparison undermines the systematic repression of fundamental rights, religious freedom, and the erasure of cultural identity that Tibetans face under Chinese authoritarian rule.

Wangchuk initially defended his remarks on social media, citing the scale of the September 2025 violence in Leh, which left four civilians dead and 80 injured. He alleged that the violence was stage-managed and occurred without authorized firing orders. However, he later issued a formal apology via Facebook, clarifying that he was comparing a specific incident of violence rather than decades of Tibetan suffering.

In a separate effort to ease regional tensions, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the withdrawal of criminal cases against 20 individuals connected to the 2025 protests.
