Djibouti Urges Peace as Ethiopia Fighting Escalates
Djibouti's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for de-escalation after the Ethiopian National Defense Force reported killing 272 TPLF rebels during a failed offensive.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti called for de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of disputes on Sunday following renewed security tensions in northern Ethiopia. The appeal comes amid reports of expanded fighting across multiple fronts, including a failed offensive launched by the Tigray People's Liberation Front on Tuesday night.
The Ethiopian National Defense Force reported that 272 TPLF rebel fighters were killed during the operation. This surge in violence follows a two-year war between federal forces and the TPLF that officially ended in November 2022.
International bodies have responded to the deteriorating security situation with urgency. The United Nations expressed concern over the instability, while the African Union urged an immediate cessation of escalatory actions and a return to direct talks under the framework of the Pretoria agreement.
