Haryana Police Block Shambhu Border to Stop Farmer March

The Haryana Police closed the Shambhu border on Tuesday to prevent Punjab farmers from marching toward Delhi for a Mahapanchayat at Kisan Ghat. The farmers are protesting a proposed trade agreement between India and the United States. To stop the marchers, police barricaded the Punjab-Haryana interstate border and deployed heavy earthmoving machinery to close sections of the Amritsar-Delhi GT Road (NH-44).

These closures forced a massive volume of traffic to divert onto the Chandigarh-Ambala highway. The Lehli-Lalru stretch became particularly crippled, with vehicle queues extending for several kilometers. The disruption caused significant delays for commuters, students, and emergency vehicles throughout the day.

Local authorities deployed traffic police to manage the congestion. Navneet Singh Mahal, Traffic SP, noted that the closure of the Shambhu barrier necessitated the diversion toward the Lehli-Lalru highway. Bikramjit Singh Brar, Dera Bassi SP, monitored the affected stretch, reporting that while traffic volume had increased, vehicles continued to move, albeit sluggishly.
