Steve Eisman Accuses AI Labs of Manufacturing Regulatory Crisis
Investor Steve Eisman claims leading AI companies are fabricating doomsday narratives to trigger regulations that protect their business interests from open-weight competitors.
Investor Steve Eisman accused leading artificial intelligence companies of fabricating a doomsday narrative to manufacture a crisis and trigger regulations that would protect their business interests. Speaking to CNBC on Thursday, Eisman argued that AI labs are attempting to create a regulatory duopoly to replace competitive moats that have eroded as open-weight models gain market share.
Eisman specifically questioned the motives of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has called for a slower pace of AI development while Anthropic prepares for an initial public offering. He identified OpenAI and Anthropic as the Achilles' heel of the industry, noting the sector's heavy dependence on these two firms.
Having recently reduced his exposure to the AI market, Eisman characterized OpenAI as the weaker of the two dominant companies. He suggested that the push for regulation is a strategic move by these firms to secure their positions as they face increasing competition from open-source alternatives.
