UK, Italy, and Japan Sign £4.6 Billion GCAP Jet Contract
The United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan awarded a £4.6 billion contract to Edgewing to develop a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet for service by 2035.
The governments of the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan signed a £4.6 billion ($6.1 billion) development contract on July 3, 2026, to advance the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The contract was awarded to Edgewing, an industrial consortium comprising BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. The 18-month agreement funds the completion of the program's advanced concept and assessment phase, as well as joint detailed design and development through the end of 2027.
This milestone follows a nine-month delay caused by British military budget constraints. To resolve the impasse, the UK government committed £8.6 billion over four years via its Defence Investment Plan, a move that reportedly relieved Japanese officials who had questioned Britain's funding resolve. This latest award follows an earlier £686 million contract signed in April 2026. UK-funded components of the project include the Excalibur flight test aircraft and a Combat Air Flying Demonstrator.
The partners aim to have the sixth-generation stealth fighter enter service by 2035, utilizing AI and digital engineering to operate alongside F-35s and Typhoons. Following the collapse of a rival Franco-German fighter program in June, the consortium is considering expanding the partnership to include other nations, such as Germany, Saudi Arabia, or Canada, to share costs and increase sales.
