Dutch Sustainable Brand Mud Jeans Declares Bankruptcy
Mud Jeans declared bankruptcy on Wednesday after failing to overcome historic debt despite a recent crowdfunding attempt to boost working capital.
The Dutch sustainable denim brand Mud Jeans declared bankruptcy on Wednesday. CEO Dion Vijgeboom announced the decision via LinkedIn, explaining that the company could not overcome the financial burden of historic debt despite internal efforts to secure a sustainable future.
This collapse follows a crowdfunding campaign launched last month that sought 300,000 euros to improve inventory management and working capital while attempting to fuel growth across the Netherlands, Belgium, and the DACH region. Founded in 2012, the company gained industry recognition for its circular approach to fashion, specifically through its "Lease a Jeans" subscription program and the use of post-consumer recycled cotton.
Although the brand previously received honors from B Lab and the King Willem I Foundation for its environmental performance, the company's complex business model and rapid growth strategy failed to reach a sufficiently broad consumer audience to sustain operations.
