U.S. Awards $245,000 to Restore Hamilton House in Nevis

The United States government provided $245,000 to restore the childhood home of Alexander Hamilton on the island of Nevis.

The Federal government of the United States awarded $245,000 this month to restore Hamilton House, a museum on the island of Nevis. The funding coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States and supports the preservation of a 17th-century Georgian stone building in Charlestown where Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Treasury Secretary and founding father, is believed to have lived as a child.

Originally built around 1680 and last restored in 1983, the structure has suffered significant woodwork damage from age and salty air, as well as historical damage from an 1840 earthquake.

Nevis Premier Mark Brantley expressed gratitude for the funds, stating that the restoration demonstrates the contribution a small island can make to the founding of the United States. Brantley noted that Hamilton remains an iconic figure whose legacy serves as an inspiration for the local population.
