Israeli Military Faces Scrutiny Over Nasser Hospital Strike Deaths

One year after a double strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza on August 25, 2025, the Israeli military has not provided a timeline for its investigation into the deaths of 22 Palestinians. The victims included journalists Hussam al-Masri and Mariam Dagga. While officials initially claimed the target was a Hamas camera and that six victims had militant links, an anonymous soldier now alleges the military found no evidence linking the camera to Hamas and that those six individuals were not intended targets.

The soldier, whose testimony was corroborated by the group The Letter Black, claims army officials often retroactively search for militant links to justify civilian casualties. Reports indicate the military used high-explosive tank shells after a precision drone strike failed. The Israeli military stated the incident is being examined and findings will be transferred to the Military Advocate General’s Corps to determine if a criminal investigation is warranted.

Press organizations and human rights advocates have demanded transparency. Julie Pace of the Associated Press stated that information received to date has fallen short of the accountability the gravity of the incident requires, while Sara Qudah of the Committee to Protect Journalists warned that a lack of accountability makes it more dangerous for the press to document conflicts.
