India Plans AI Solutions to Stabilize Power Grid from Data Centers

Indian energy officials and Grid India leadership are planning AI-driven strategies to manage intense power loads from expanding data centers and intermittent renewable energy.

Indian energy officials and grid operators are calling for a national strategy to prevent the rapid growth of AI-driven data centers from destabilizing the national power grid. Samir Chandra Saxena, chairman and managing director of Grid India, warned at the India AI Impact Summit that installed data center capacity is projected to grow from 1.2 gigawatts to between 8 and 10 gigawatts by 2030. Saxena noted that these facilities create intense loads and may perform silent exits, abruptly isolating themselves from the grid and causing systemic disturbances.

To mitigate these risks, Saxena and Abhishek Ranjan, CEO of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, urged the Central Electricity Authority to develop a national plan designating optimal sites for data centers. Ranjan cautioned that failure to predetermine these sites could lead to infrastructure chaos and higher tariffs for consumers. Proposed solutions include updating energy standards and integrating energy storage.

Complementing these concerns, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi advocated for the use of AI-driven digital twins to maintain grid stability. Joshi explained that because wind and solar power are intermittent, AI is necessary to manage the grid and prevent energy curtailment. This approach aligns with findings from the International Energy Agency, which indicates that AI can manage the increasing complexities of power sectors relying on variable renewables.
