Bank of New York Mellon Launches Tokenized Deposit Platform
Bank of New York Mellon launched a private blockchain platform allowing institutional clients to tokenize bank deposits for near real-time settlement of collateral and margin workflows.
Bank of New York Mellon launched a tokenized deposit capability on a private, permissioned blockchain to enable near real-time institutional settlement. The system creates 1:1 digital representations of existing cash balances, allowing institutional clients and digital-native entities to transfer mirrored balances instantly to meet margin calls and collateral requirements. This infrastructure bypasses legacy batch processing delays and cut-off times while maintaining official records on traditional core ledgers for regulatory compliance and reporting.
The initiative aims to provide programmable, 24/7 settlement efficiency and improved liquidity management. This rollout follows a July 2025 partnership with Goldman Sachs to launch tokenized money market funds and aligns with broader industry trends toward real-world asset tokenization seen at firms like BlackRock. The project involves participation from digital-native firms, including Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd.
Bank of New York Mellon executives and industry partners described the move as a step toward an always-on operating model for institutional markets. The platform is designed to extend trusted bank deposits onto digital rails to increase operational speed within a framework aligned with existing regulatory risk controls.
