Opposition Parties Seek Removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

The Aam Aadmi Party and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have agreed to support an opposition notice seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This coordination occurs despite both parties having distanced themselves from the Congress-led INDIA bloc. The move follows meetings between various opposition leaders, including discussions between DMK leader Kanimozhi and All India Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, as well as talks between Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M A Baby and the Aam Aadmi Party.

This represents the third attempt by opposition groups to move a removal motion, following rejected or contested notices in March and April. The current effort is driven by reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi objected to Kumar's decisions on at least 14 occasions, specifically regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The Election Commission of India has denied these allegations. The commission maintains that all decisions concerning the Special Intensive Revision were taken unanimously.
