Bomb Attack in Sevastopol Kills Russian Naval Officer

A bomb explosion in occupied Sevastopol killed a Russian military officer on August 13, 2026. The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation reported the detention of a Russian woman, born in 1994, who is suspected of carrying out the attack under orders from Ukrainian intelligence services.

While officials did not officially name the victim, reports from Telegram channels and the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets identify the deceased as Robert Shageev. Shageev was reportedly a captain first rank in the Russian Navy and a former Ukrainian naval officer who commanded the submarine Zaporizhzhia before defecting to Russia during the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding the method of the attack. The Federal Security Service stated the explosive device was planted in a trash bin next to a bench on Stoletovsky Prospekt, while a law enforcement source told RBC the bomb was hidden in a backpack and detonated by a woman.

In a separate incident in Sevastopol, Regional Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that five people died overnight during an operation to dispose of an explosive device. The government of Ukraine has not provided an immediate comment on the assassination.
