DHS Spends $464 Million on Idle No-Bid Aircraft Fleet

The Department of Homeland Security spent $464 million on a no-bid contract to purchase 10 used aircraft, including seven Boeing 737s and three luxury business jets, intended for deportation flights. Despite the expenditure, the fleet has remained largely idle. Seven Boeing 737s are currently parked at an airport in Lake Charles, Louisiana, because the agency lacks the operational staff to fly them.

One luxury jet was leased to the Federal Bureau of Investigations to support the travel of Director Kash Patel, while another was offered to the Pentagon. The contract was awarded to Daedalus Aviation Corporation, led by Chairman Billy Walters, who previously donated to a political committee supporting former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

Internal disputes have emerged regarding the contract's authorization. Current Secretary Markwayne Mullin and former Secretary Kristi Noem have each attributed the finalization of the purchase to the other. Senate Democrats Patty Murray and Christopher Murphy have demanded a full accounting of the spending, describing the purchase as a gross misuse of tax dollars.
