DWP Restarts Disability Benefit Transfers for 150,000 Adults

The Department for Work and Pensions will restart the process of transferring approximately 150,000 adult Disability Living Allowance claimants to Personal Independence Payment beginning in September. This program was previously paused in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The rollout will begin with a small-scale pilot involving around 3,000 claimants in England and Wales. This initial phase is designed to test the operational impact and the effect on benefit spending before the wider transfer continues.

Claimants will not be moved automatically. Instead, they must be invited to apply for PIP and complete an assessment. Once invited, individuals typically have 28 days to start their application to ensure their payments continue without interruption. Those who fail to submit a claim by the final deadline may have their DLA payments closed.

This specific process does not apply to residents of Scotland. Disability benefits in that region are managed separately by Social Security Scotland.
