India Marks 80th Independence Day with Global Flag Relay

India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, through a combination of strategic domestic milestones and a global diplomatic relay. In Chhattisgarh, security forces hoisted the national flag for the first time since Independence at Karreguttalu Hills in the Bijapur district. The site, part of the Bastar region, was previously a Naxal stronghold until Operation Black Forest in 2025 neutralized 31 Naxalites. Vijay Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, stated the event signifies the end of fear in the region, while Minister Kedar Kashyap credited the eradication of Naxalism to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Simultaneously, the government executed the Suryapath Tiranga initiative, a symbolic global relay following the path of the rising sun. Launched on August 9 by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign, the relay involved hoisting the Tricolour in succession from east to west across Indian missions. The journey progressed from New Zealand to the Indian High Commission in Canberra, which then passed the symbolic relay to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo. The Ministry of Culture encouraged citizens to participate in the broader campaign through August 17 by hoisting flags and engaging in community activities to honor independence sacrifices.
