Graham Platner Scheduled to Speak at Maine Labor Rally

Former Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner is scheduled to be the featured speaker at a Labor Day rally on September 7 at Ellsworth City Hall. Organized by Hancock County Activists and Acadia Action, the event marks Platner's first public appearance since he withdrew from the Senate race in July following allegations of sexual assault and domestic abuse from former partners. Platner has denied the claims, stating that the things that have been claimed "did not happen."

The appearance has sparked significant political friction. The Maine Republican Party criticized the event, suggesting that if Platner is still viewed as a leader, the Democratic party is "out of touch with Maine." Meanwhile, the Hancock County Democratic Committee initially promoted the rally on its website and social media before removing references to Platner and clarifying that the event is not sanctioned by the party.

Survivors Jenny Racicot and Lyndsey Fifield issued a joint statement urging Mainers to "refuse to platform abusers" and calling for the event's cancellation. Other Democratic figures, including State Rep. Marc Malon and former party Vice Chair Peggy Schaffer, described platforming Platner as "irresponsible" while current nominee Troy Jackson campaigns against Republican Senator Susan Collins. Platner is expected to discuss the history of the U.S. labor movement rather than his failed campaign.
