Transit Agencies Offer Free Rides for Election Day Voters

Public transit agencies in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina are waiving fares on November 3 to remove transportation barriers for voters.

Several public transit agencies are providing free transportation on Tuesday, November 3, to ensure voters can reach their polling locations. The Maryland Transit Administration is waiving fares all day across its Local Bus, Metro Subway, Light Rail, and Mobility services, encouraging residents to use the Transit app to find their assigned polls.

In Virginia, the Danville Transit System will offer free rides on all fixed-route and reservation-based door-to-door services. Voters in Danville face a ballot featuring five races and three proposed constitutional amendments. Similarly, Link Transit in Alamance County, North Carolina, is continuing its Free Rides on Election Day program across all routes and services.

Link Transit manager John Andoh stated that free transportation ensures that no one is denied their right to vote simply because they cannot afford a ride. These local initiatives align with broader guidance from the Federal Transit Administration, which has encouraged public transit agencies nationwide to improve access to the polls.
