BAE Systems Unveils Brontanax Unmanned Fighter Jet at Farnborough

BAE Systems unveiled Brontanax, the United Kingdom's first uncrewed autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 22, 2026. Designed as a "loyal wingman," the drone provides electronic warfare and precision strike capabilities to support crewed aircraft such as the Eurofighter Typhoon. The aircraft is designed to deliver 70% to 80% of a traditional fighter's capabilities at approximately 20% to 25% of the cost, with an estimated price of $25 million.

The UK government will adopt Brontanax as the operational concept demonstrator for the £300 million sovereign Storm Fighter program. To accelerate market entry, BAE Systems self-funded more than £400 million in research and development. A prototype has been assembled in Warton, England, where it is currently undergoing ground testing.

Flight testing is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, with a potential service entry by 2030. The Royal Air Force intends to demonstrate the capability during the 2027 NATO exercise Steadfast Defender. While the prototype currently utilizes a U.S. Williams International engine, BAE Systems and the Royal Air Force plan to transition to British powerplants developed by Rolls-Royce in the future.
