Unison Chief Slams UK Government Over North Sea Drilling
Unison general secretary Andrea Egan criticized the UK government for prioritizing North Sea gas projects over investment in public sector workers and clean energy.
General secretary of the trade union Unison Andrea Egan criticized the UK government for treating public sector workers as an "afterthought" while focusing political attention on North Sea oil and gas jobs. Egan described the government's approval of the Jackdaw gasfield as a "serious misstep" that contradicts climate commitments.
Egan urged ministers to prioritize investment in clean energy and public services, specifically citing the NHS, education, and care sectors, which have faced significant job cuts. While other unions such as Unite and GMB support more drilling licenses to protect oil and gas workers, Unison and the National Education Union oppose further drilling.
To support the transition to sustainable employment, Unison recently secured a recognition deal with Octopus Energy, the largest energy company in the UK, to promote unionized and well-paid jobs within the renewable sector.
