Hyundai Labor Union Opposes Atlas Robot Deployment in Factories

Hyundai Motor's South Korean labor union threatens to block the deployment of Atlas humanoid robots unless the company reaches a formal labor-management agreement to protect jobs.

The Hyundai Motor labor union in South Korea has vowed to block the deployment of humanoid robots on production lines unless a formal agreement is reached between workers and management. The 40,000-member union warned that introducing the technology without consultation could trigger employment shocks and major job losses, accusing the automaker of prioritizing profits and labor cost reductions over worker security.

The dispute followed the unveiling of a production-ready Atlas humanoid robot, developed by subsidiary Boston Dynamics, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Hyundai Motor Group plans to establish a manufacturing facility to produce 30,000 Atlas units annually by 2028. The company intends to begin deploying these robots at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia starting in 2028 to handle sequencing and high-risk tasks, with eventual expansion to all global sites.

Hydnai stated that the Atlas robot is a general-purpose tool designed to assist humans with hazardous and repetitive work. Meanwhile, the union criticized the company's strategic shift of production to the United States to navigate American tariffs. The union claims that the Georgia plant, which targets an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles by 2028, is already negatively impacting output and job security at two domestic plants in South Korea. Despite these tensions, investors responded positively to the automation strategy, driving company shares to record highs.
