Armenia Arrests Former President Robert Kocharyan in Corruption Raids
Armenian authorities arrested former President Robert Kocharyan and his son Sedrak during a series of anti-corruption raids targeting opposition figures and their businesses.
Armenian law enforcement agencies conducted a series of raids on Tuesday, August 25, targeting the family of former President Robert Kocharyan. The operations followed instructions from Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to deprive Robert Kocharyan and former President Serzh Sargsyan of their property.
The Anti-Corruption Committee confirmed the arrests of Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son, Sedrak Kocharyan. As part of the investigation, the National Security Service deployed elite Alpha special forces to raid the residence of opposition lawmaker Levon Kocharyan. Fellow MP Mesrop Manukyan criticized the operation as disproportionate because Levon Kocharyan's minor children were present during the raid.
Authorities also searched the home of Robert Kocharyan and several other family-linked properties. In addition to residential raids, tax authorities sealed the Yerevan office of Toyota, where Sedrak Kocharyan is a shareholder, and officials conducted searches at Orange Fitness.
