Renewables Meet Record 80.4% of Australia's Power Demand

Chris Bowen, the Australian Energy Minister, characterized a new energy milestone as a sign of increasing clean, sovereign energy powering the country after solar and wind generation met a record 80.4% of power demand on the main electricity grid on Saturday.

Rooftop solar panels provided more than half of the power used in the national electricity market during a 30-minute window around lunchtime. This peak was supported by wind farms and a 1% contribution from hydro, leaving fossil fuels to account for the remaining 20% of demand. Researchers noted that coal generation in Queensland also hit a record low over the weekend, though the peak coincided with clear weather and low heating and cooling demand.

Despite the record, the Australian Energy Market Operator reported that the average renewable share for the year ending in June was 44%. Recent analysis suggests that investment in new capacity remains insufficient to meet the national target of 82% renewable energy by 2030.
