Election Commission of India Orders Massive Electoral Roll Revisions
The Election Commission of India launched electoral roll revisions across 23 regions and provided a second inclusion opportunity for excluded voters in seven states.
The Election Commission of India has initiated a wide-scale update of electoral rolls across multiple states and union territories to ensure voter accuracy. The commission ordered a Special Summary Revision (SSR) for Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha, and Sikkim. This follows an October order for 17 other regions, bringing the total number of affected areas to 23.
Starting November 20, 2026, the SSR will focus on enrolling eligible citizens, particularly first-time voters, using January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date. Draft rolls will be published on November 30, with a window for claims and objections open until December 30. Final rolls are scheduled for publication on January 21, 2027. To prevent wrongful deletions, the commission capped Form 7 applications at 10 per person and required Electoral Registration Officers to personally verify any deletions exceeding 2% of a polling station's electors.
Additionally, the commission announced on November 6 that electors in Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana, and Nagaland who were excluded from draft rolls will have another chance for inclusion. These voters were primarily marked as Absent, Shifted, Dead, or Duplicate. Booth Level Officers will deliver partially filled Enumeration Forms to these individuals physically or digitally via WhatsApp, email, and SMS to rectify the exclusions before the final rolls are published.
