Democratic Socialism Gains Momentum in Major U.S. Cities

Democratic socialism is gaining political momentum across the United States, marked by the January 1 election of a democratic socialist mayor in the largest U.S. city and a record number of socialist legislators winning primaries in New York.

JB Pritzker, the Governor of Illinois, has endorsed this trend, characterizing these electoral victories as "the recipe for winning in 2026 and beyond." The movement is increasingly represented by figures such as New York legislator Zohran Mamdani.

Critics of the movement argue that democratic socialism is not a viable cure for the flaws of capitalism. Opponents contend that true socialism leads to economic collapse and the rise of new elites, citing Venezuela as a primary example. They further argue that Nordic models are market economies rather than socialist ones, and warn that implementing universal basic income or wealth taxes in the U.S. would trigger structural inflation and capital flight.
