Goodman Group Abandons A$1.2 Billion Sydney Data Centre

Goodman Group abandoned plans to construct a A$1.2 billion data centre in the Sydney suburb of Lane Cove. The 90-megawatt facility, designated as Project Mars, was withdrawn after residents and community groups raised concerns regarding noise pollution, environmental impacts, and the site's proximity to homes and Lane Cove West Public School.

In a letter to the New South Wales Department of Planning, the property company cited community feedback and an evolving policy and regulatory environment as the reasons for the decision. The withdrawal followed a federal Senate inquiry where the developer admitted the project lacked a social licence.

During the inquiry, Senator Sarah Henderson criticized the developer for showing contempt for local residents. The company's decision marks the end of a contentious proposal that faced significant local resistance before its formal withdrawal.
