Kansas Senate Poll Shows Sharp Republican Response Gap

The Washington Post and George Mason University report a significant disparity in voter response rates between Democrats and Republicans in a competitive Kansas Senate race.

A joint survey by The Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government revealed a stark response disparity in the competitive Kansas Senate race between Republican Senator Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton. Polling Director Scott Clement reported that registered Democrats were more than twice as likely as registered Republicans to complete the survey, with a 32 percent response rate compared to 12 percent for Republicans.

Analysts offered conflicting explanations for the gap. Mark Rozell, dean of the Schar School, attributed the low Republican participation to a lack of enthusiasm fueled by inflation and an unpopular president. In contrast, pollster Frank Luntz argued that the disparity stems from a deep-seated distrust of polling among Republican voters, who frequently avoid phone calls from pollsters, potentially leading to under-sampling of the GOP electorate.
