Brussels Cancels Schuman Square Steel Canopy Over Rising Costs

The Government of Brussels cancelled the construction of a steel canopy with a green roof intended for Schuman Square, leaving the area as a concrete expanse. Originally launched in 2015 as an urban agora to symbolize the European project, the project's cost escalated from 5 million euros to 13 million euros due to inflation.

The project suffered from a 613-day political deadlock in Brussels. In 2025, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever blocked a caretaker government's request for additional EU funding, describing Brussels as a failed state. The current administration, which took office in February 2026, officially opted to cancel the canopy in favor of a cheaper, greener alternative that may include water features. Officials aim to complete the new design by summer 2028.

Former minister Pascal Smet and over 2,100 petitioners continue to advocate for the original design. Project engineer-architect Francis De Wolf expressed confusion regarding the political decisions that led to the cancellation, stating that the project is not finished.
