UK Pensions Commission Reviews Retirement Saving Rates

The Pensions Commission is reviewing the United Kingdom's pension system to increase workplace contributions and expand savings for the self-employed.

The Pensions Commission is conducting a comprehensive review of the United Kingdom's pension system to ensure citizens save sufficient funds for retirement. The commission will deliver its final policy recommendations to the Government of the United Kingdom in Spring 2027.

Professor Nick Pearce, an expert with the commission, noted that while state pension reforms and credits for women have been successful, workplace pension saving rates remain inadequate. The UK currently has the lowest pension saving rate among G7 countries, prompting the commission to evaluate whether to increase the current 8 per cent minimum contribution rate.

Proposed reforms focus on expanding auto-enrolment to individuals currently excluded due to age or low earnings. The commission is also designing new mechanisms to integrate the self-employed into the system, as only 4 per cent of those relying solely on self-employment currently save into a pension.
