Suncorp Profit Drops 44% as Insurance Premiums Outpace Inflation
Suncorp Group reported a 44% profit decline to $1.03 billion following $10.1 billion in weather-related claims and rising insurance premiums.
Suncorp Group reported a 44% drop in net profit to $1.03 billion for the year ending June 30, driven by $10.1 billion in claims from 32 weather events across Australia and New Zealand. Despite the profit decline, the company announced a total dividend of 79 cents per share and a $250 million share buyback.
During a Wednesday earnings briefing, CEO Steve Johnson stated that insurance premiums in Australia are rising by approximately 6% annually, nearly double the wider economy's consumer price index of 3.8%. Johnson noted that insurance inflation operates at a different pace than general inflation and acknowledged that the company needs to communicate better regarding premium costs.
These disclosures follow a corporate watchdog report claiming consumers are under-informed and overpaying for premiums. In response, Suncorp is engaging with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and Federal Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino to improve transparency for its customers.
