Waymo Launches Reference Driver Model to Benchmark AV Safety

Waymo, the Alphabet-owned robotaxi company, has introduced the Reference Driver (ReD), a computer model designed to benchmark autonomous driving software against competent human behavior. Developed in collaboration with the TU Delft Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and detailed in Nature Communications, the model utilizes an active inference framework to simulate how humans anticipate risks and react to traffic conflicts.

Unlike traditional models that prioritize last-second reactive maneuvers, ReD reproduces proactive human behavior and simulates the internal sense of surprise experienced by a driver during a conflict. Waymo characterizes the system as a behavioral crash dummy intended to improve accident avoidance and evaluate robotaxi performance in potential crash scenarios.

To promote industry-wide collaboration and a scientifically grounded approach to autonomous vehicle safety, Waymo is releasing the research code under an academic, non-commercial license.
