Vantara Halts Import of Endangered Species to Curb Risks

The Vantara animal rescue and rehabilitation center has announced a major shift in its acquisition strategy to avoid legal scrutiny and reputational damage. In a 38-page letter to the CITES management office under India's environment ministry, the 3,500-acre facility stated it will no longer import big cats, great apes, or any species facing extinction from their natural habitats.

To prevent the center from becoming a driver of illegal wildlife trade, Vantara is implementing a new three-stage screening process for all future acquisitions. This policy reversal follows allegations that some animals were captured in the wild, despite a September 2025 ruling by the Supreme Court of India which found that the center had complied with customs, money-laundering, and wildlife laws.

The strategic pivot is viewed as an effort by Mukesh Ambani to protect the image of Reliance Industries Ltd. and secure a stable leadership succession for his children. Anant Ambani, the founder of Vantara, became an executive director of the flagship conglomerate in April 2025.
