China Rejects India's Standardized Naming of 27 Zangnan Locations

The Government of India updated the Survey of India map to include standard names for 27 locations in the Zangnan region, including four mountain passes and a high-altitude lake. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the move on August 7, stating the initiative ensures the correct identification of these places and improves public awareness of their geographical and historical significance.

The Government of China rejected the legitimacy of the naming effort on August 11, asserting that the Zangnan region is its sovereign territory. Chinese officials characterized the action as self-deception and an attempt to reinforce Indian claims over disputed territory. China maintains that it does not recognize the administration of Arunachal Pradesh and has released its own standardized names for 112 locations in the region since 2017.

This diplomatic friction follows the August 6 meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs in New Delhi. While both nations recently sought to stabilize relations through high-level diplomatic meetings and the reopening of the Nathu La Pass after six years, China warned that unilateral administrative actions complicate ongoing boundary negotiations.
