India Reduces Export Levies on Petrol and Diesel

The Government of India reduced export levies on petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel effective September 16, 2026. According to notifications from the Ministry of Finance, the export duty on petrol decreased by Rs 1 per litre to Rs 0.5, while the duty on aviation turbine fuel dropped by Rs 4 per litre to Rs 15.

For diesel, the government reduced the export levy by Rs 5 per litre to Rs 20. This adjustment included reducing the Special Additional Excise Duty to Rs 20 per litre and the complete withdrawal of the Rs 1 per litre Road and Infrastructure Cess. Domestic excise duty rates for petrol and diesel remain unchanged.

These levies were originally implemented on March 27, 2026, to protect the domestic availability of petroleum products during the West Asia crisis. The government continues to review these rates every fortnight based on fluctuations in international crude oil and fuel prices.
