The World Travel & Tourism Council opened its 26th Global Summit in Valletta, forecasting 3.1% growth for European tourism in 2026.
The World Travel & Tourism Council opened its 26th Global Summit in Valletta, Malta, on October 7, 2026. The three-day event, themed FUTU[RE]SET, convened over 1,000 delegates, including 200 CEOs and 60 government officials, to address sustainable growth, artificial intelligence, and workforce development.
WTTC research released at the opening indicates that Europe's travel and tourism sector will grow by 3.1% in 2026, outpacing the projected global growth of 2.5%. International visitor spending in Europe is expected to rise 5.8%, with business travel spending increasing by 4.2%. For the host nation, the sector is projected to contribute $4.9 billion to the economy in 2026, accounting for 16.9% of Malta's GDP.
During the summit, the WTTC hosted a Global Leaders Dialogue with ministers and business leaders from 24 countries. The discussion focused on rewriting the rules of global competitiveness by improving the traveler journey through AI-supported visa processing and biometric border systems. Participants also examined the need for regulatory transparency and speed to attract private capital for infrastructure, noting that these factors now outweigh traditional tax incentives.
Malta is utilizing the summit to showcase a strategic shift toward high-value, year-round tourism. This model prioritizes economic, social, and environmental value over simple visitor volume to ensure local communities benefit while preserving national identity.
