ABC Demands One Nation Remove Violent Bluey Cartoons

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is seeking the removal of One Nation political cartoons that depict the children's character Bluey committing acts of violence.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the right-wing populist party One Nation, demanding the immediate removal of satirical videos and coloring books featuring the children's character Bluey. The dispute centers on the 'Please Explain' web series and associated coloring books distributed at agricultural shows in Brisbane and Mount Gambier. The content depicts Bluey ramming politicians, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, with an SUV, and shows the character being held at knifepoint.

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks testified during a Senate estimates hearing that the unauthorized use of the character is an infringement of intellectual property and is "disrespectful to the children of Australia." While the ABC airs Bluey under license, the intellectual property is held by Ludo Studio and BBC Studios. The broadcaster is currently exploring legal options for injunctive relief in coordination with those rights holders.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has denied that the materials breach intellectual property laws, defending the content as satire. The party further accused Marks of bias and contempt for One Nation voters. Communications Minister Anika Wells supported the broadcaster's position, stating the ABC is within its rights to be concerned. The controversy has gained further attention following a real-world attack in October 2026 where a lawmaker was seriously injured by a vehicle.
