IMF Warns Hedge Fund Assets Hit 13 Trillion Dollars
The International Monetary Fund warns that hedge fund assets have tripled to 13 trillion dollars, increasing risks in sovereign bond markets through high leverage.
The International Monetary Fund reported Tuesday that hedge fund assets more than tripled over the last decade, reaching approximately 13 trillion dollars by early 2026. This growth was driven primarily by leverage, including the use of synthetic leverage through derivatives.
The organization highlighted a significant expansion of hedge fund activity in sovereign bond markets. In the United States Treasury market, hedge funds now account for 9% of the market, an increase from 4% in 2022.
While the International Monetary Fund acknowledged that these funds can improve market efficiency, it warned that their opacity and reliance on leverage can amplify financial stress during periods of market deterioration. The organization urged policymakers to increase risk monitoring and close existing data gaps to mitigate potential vulnerabilities within the global financial system.
