Department of Defense Launches ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil Platform
The United States Department of Defense added ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government to its secure GenAI.mil platform for unclassified administrative use.
The United States Department of Defense launched ChatGPT Mil on August 31, 2026, as part of its secure generative AI platform, GenAI.mil. The tool is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, granting up to 3 million personnel access to AI assistance for logistics, planning, policy, and administration.
On the same day, the department integrated Starshield AI’s Grok for Government into the platform, which already hosts Google Gemini. This multi-model strategy is designed to enhance the American AI ecosystem and prevent reliance on a single vendor. OpenAI confirmed that data processed through the platform is isolated within the government environment and is not used to train commercial models.
While GenAI.mil focuses on unclassified efficiency, the department continues to develop separate classified AI capabilities for combat operations. Joe Larson, OpenAI's government sales chief, stated that the tool is intended to increase efficiency while maintaining human judgment and accountability for high-stakes decisions.
