Defense Department Launches ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government

The United States Department of Defense launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government on its secure GenAI.mil platform on August 31, 2026. These tools are accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, allowing up to 3 million military and civilian personnel to utilize generative AI for planning, policy, logistics, and administration.

ChatGPT Mil focuses on document-heavy administrative workflows, while Grok for Government, provided via SpaceX's Starshield AI, is designed for mission execution, market research, and supply-chain management. The department adopted a multi-model approach, which already includes Google Gemini, to prevent vendor lock-in and expand the American AI ecosystem. OpenAI confirmed that data processed on the platform remains isolated within government infrastructure and is not used to train commercial models.

The rollout excludes Anthropic, which the administration designated a supply-chain risk after the company resisted the unrestricted military use of its systems, specifically regarding autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. This exclusion led to a legal battle, resulting in a ruling by U.S. District Judge Rita Lin that the government's actions against Anthropic constituted unlawful retaliation and violated the company's First and Fifth Amendment rights.
