Madison County Turnout Mirrors 2022 Midterm Trends
Madison County Clerk Kenny Barger reports voter turnout is on track to reach 40% in the Kentucky 6th Congressional District race.
Madison County, Kentucky, is serving as a bellwether for the U.S. Midterm Elections and the race for Kentucky's 6th Congressional District between Republican Ralph Alvarado and Democrat Zach Dembo. County Clerk Kenny Barger reported that 16,364 votes had been cast by 5:00 PM on Election Day, representing a 33% turnout. Barger expects total participation to reach approximately 40%, a level consistent with the 2022 Midterm Races.
The total voter count in the county decreased by about 1,000 people following a voter roll purge ordered by Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams.
Nationally, civic engagement experts are monitoring the midterms, which typically see lower participation than presidential elections. Mindy Romero of the Center for Inclusive Democracy and Will Mantell of FairVote identified systemic barriers affecting young and minority voters. While groups like Northeastern Votes have attempted to increase registration, advocates argue that a focus on high-propensity voters and limited ballot options continue to drive apathy among younger demographics.
