Saudi-Led Consortium Acquires Electronic Arts for $55 Billion
A consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund took Electronic Arts private in a $55 billion leveraged buyout.
A consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed the $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts on August 4, 2026, taking the gaming company private. The investment group includes PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. To fund the transaction, the consortium utilized $36 billion in equity and $20 billion in debt financing provided by JPMorgan Chase Bank, marking one of the largest leveraged buyouts in history.
CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the company will retain its creative freedom and player-first values. Despite these assurances, the deal has triggered backlash from employees and advocacy groups concerned that Saudi Arabia's conservative laws could lead to the censorship of LGBTQ+ themes in franchises such as The Sims.
Industry analysts have raised further concerns regarding the company's heavy debt load, suggesting it may lead to aggressive monetization and mass layoffs. Reports indicate that investors are betting on the integration of artificial intelligence to reduce overall operating costs. Electronic Arts will remain headquartered in Redwood City, California.
