Telecom Executives Warn UK AI Race Risk Over Poor Networks

Senior telecoms executives warn that the United Kingdom is risking its position in the global artificial intelligence race due to inadequate mobile network infrastructure. While broadband speeds have improved, 5G upgrades are lagging, leaving the country vulnerable to a future AI-traffic crunch as artificial intelligence integrates into consumer devices.

Andrea Donà, Networks Director at VodafoneThree, described current network quality as sub-optimal and called for urgent planning reform. A report from Which? and Opensignal ranked the UK 57th globally for network performance, placing it behind all G7 and EU member states.

Industry leaders attribute the stagnation to bureaucratic planning permissions for upgrading existing masts and a lack of government relief for critical national infrastructure. In response to these challenges, VodafoneThree has committed 11 billion pounds to 5G stand-alone technology, while urging the prime minister to implement reforms to maintain national competitiveness.
