UK Government Plans Rutland and Leicestershire Council Merger

The Government of the United Kingdom plans to merge Rutland's council with Leicestershire County Council in spring 2028. This reorganization is part of a broader national initiative to establish 15 larger unitary authorities across England to reduce duplication in the two-tier system and prioritize objectives such as housebuilding.

The proposal has triggered the 'Save Rutland' campaign, driven by residents and officials who fear the loss of the area's ceremonial county status. Such a loss would result in the removal of Rutland's high sheriff and lord lieutenant. Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns attempted to protect this status through legislative amendments, but those efforts were rejected.

Opinions on the merger remain divided. Some residents view the move as a threat to local identity, while others, including Labour councillor Ramsay Ross, argue the change will improve access to affordable housing and economic development funds. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has stated it will protect Rutland's unique identity and ceremonial status during the transition.
