India Accuses Pakistan of Military Rule at United Nations

India criticized Pakistan's judicial independence and human rights record during a United Nations General Assembly committee discussion on the rule of law.

During a United Nations General Assembly Sixth Committee discussion on the rule of law, R. Mythili, a counsellor in the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, delivered a sharp rebuttal against Pakistan. Exercising the Right of Reply, Mythili asserted that Pakistan is in no position to lecture other nations on the rule of law because its military effectively determines the law at home, stating that the army is the rule and the law.

India specifically cited Pakistan's 26th Constitutional Amendment as a blow to judicial independence and condemned the arbitrary imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan as a mockery of the legal system. Mythili further accused Pakistan of muzzling judges, sentencing civilians through military courts, and restricting foreign media through new facilitation guidelines. India dismissed Pakistani allegations regarding the treatment of religious minorities as a tactical diversion.

Additionally, Mythili defended Operation Sindoor, a May 2025 military action targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Describing the operation as a measured and proportionate response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Mythili challenged the notion of Pakistani victory, suggesting that bombed airfields and destroyed hangars do not constitute a win.
