Lula Launches Fourth Presidential Campaign in São Bernardo do Campo

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will return to the Vila Euclides stadium in São Bernardo do Campo this Sunday to launch his campaign for a fourth presidential term. The Workers' Party is organizing the event at a location of deep historical significance, as it served as the site of the 1979 and 1980 metalworker strikes that Lula helped lead. Those strikes are credited with helping end Brazil's military dictatorship and facilitating the return to democracy in 1985.

The upcoming October election is expected to be a close contest. While Lula currently holds a modest lead in the polls, he faces a challenge from Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Flávio is running in place of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is ineligible to seek office following a 27-year prison sentence for plotting to prevent Lula from taking power.

The campaign launch takes place as the political climate in the ABC Paulista region has shifted. The area, once a stronghold for Lula's labor movement, has experienced a rightward drift and increased support for the Bolsonaro family.
