Kroger Launches Three-Year Plan to Boost Earnings via AI
Kroger announced a strategic plan to increase earnings through AI-driven cost savings, corporate job cuts, and expanded fresh food offerings by 2029.
Kroger introduced a three-year strategic plan on Tuesday designed to modernize operations and increase earnings amid weak consumer spending. The company targets 7% to 11% compound annual growth in adjusted net earnings per share and 3% to 6% growth in adjusted EBITDA from 2027 through 2029, while expecting core comparable sales growth of approximately 3% by 2029.
To compete with rivals such as Walmart and Aldi, the retailer will prioritize its core grocery business by expanding private-label brands, prepared meals, fresh offerings, and its membership program. The company also intends to grow its retail media and e-commerce sectors. These financial targets exclude the pending acquisition of Giant Eagle.
Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran and Chief Financial Officer David Kennerley stated that the initiatives will be self-funded through disciplined purchasing and direct sourcing. A significant portion of these savings will come from the implementation of artificial intelligence to simplify operations. As part of these efficiency measures, Foran previously announced in a memo that the company plans to eliminate approximately one-third of its corporate roles over the next three years by using AI to reduce duplicative work. Kroger reaffirmed its guidance for 2026.
