Spirit Airlines Shuts Down as JetBlue Expands Florida Hub

Spirit Airlines ceased operations after 34 years, prompting JetBlue to expand its Fort Lauderdale presence to fill the capacity void.

Spirit Airlines ceased all operations and canceled all flights after 34 years of service, ending its role as a major low-cost competitor. The shutdown follows a period of intense financial pressure driven by soaring operating costs, specifically jet fuel spending, which rose 84% in May 2026. The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that the average price per gallon climbed from $2.21 to $4.09 over one year, a surge attributed to Middle East conflicts that disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

JetBlue is moving rapidly to occupy the void left by the collapse. CEO Joanna Geraghty announced that the airline is increasing its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to 130 flights per week, with a goal of 150 daily departures by year-end. The expansion includes 55 nonstop destinations and the acquisition of approximately 30 of Spirit's former gates. Geraghty criticized the federal government's prior decision to block the JetBlue-Spirit merger, arguing the move was short-sighted and contributed to the airline's eventual failure.

Industry-wide, airfares remain elevated despite a recent dip in fuel prices. Data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation shows average ticket prices rose 18% in May compared to the previous year. Economists cite the removal of Spirit's low-cost capacity and high summer demand as primary drivers of these costs. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that other carriers are providing seating options for displaced Spirit employees, while major carriers like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines prepare to report quarterly earnings reflecting the impact of fuel price volatility.
