Reserve Bank of Australia Weighs Rate Hikes Amid Oil Surge

The Reserve Bank of Australia is considering interest rate increases to combat inflation driven by rising global oil prices and Middle East conflict.

The Reserve Bank of Australia is weighing further interest rate hikes to keep inflation within its 2-3 per cent target. Rising oil prices, which recently reached $US106 a barrel due to conflict in the Middle East and the war against Iran, have triggered a supply shock. Surging costs for diesel and LNG are increasing expenses for food production, manufacturing, and transport.

This inflationary pressure creates a policy trade-off for the bank, as unemployment reached a five-year high of 4.7 per cent in September. While weak jobs data led financial markets to lower expectations for a November rate increase to 4.85 per cent, the bank remains concerned about global pressures, including the AI construction boom.

Governor Michele Bullock stated that high inflation "tends to impose the most significant burdens on households with limited financial buffers" and noted that such price increases distort price signals and make budgeting more difficult. The International Energy Agency reported that diesel prices are specifically impacting economic activity and real incomes.
