Five Major U.S. Energy Firms Prioritize Shareholder Returns
Exxon Mobil Corporation, Chevron Corporation, and other major U.S. energy producers are prioritizing dividends and share buybacks over aggressive drilling following high oil prices.
Five major U.S. energy producers have shifted their strategy to prioritize shareholder returns over aggressive drilling since oil prices rose above $80 per barrel in early 2024. Using increased free cash flow, Exxon Mobil Corporation, Chevron Corporation, ConocoPhillips, EOG Resources, Inc., and Devon Energy Corporation have implemented significant dividend increases and multi-billion dollar share buyback programs.
Exxon Mobil Corporation extended its dividend streak to 43 years and authorized $20 billion for share buybacks in 2026. Chevron Corporation achieved 39 consecutive annual dividend increases and returned $27.1 billion to shareholders in 2025. ConocoPhillips raised its quarterly dividend by 8% in the final quarter of 2025 and plans to direct 45% of its 2026 operational cash to shareholders.
Other industry moves include EOG Resources, Inc. raising its quarterly dividend to $1.02 and completing the acquisition of Encino. Devon Energy Corporation transitioned to a fixed dividend structure in 2025 and anticipates a 31% dividend increase following its pending all-stock merger with Coterra Energy, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026.
